I’m cheating a bit this morning and combining two events – photo 101’s theme of the day “moment and motion” and Tiny’s Expat’s weekly Show Your World. [edited to say: I have now added a third event: Monday Escapes]
Clearwater is on the Gulf coast of Florida, about two hour’s drive from Orlando. We visit Florida a lot – my husband’s only living relative, his brother, lives there so we try and get there as often as we can. But while we all enjoy the theme parks and the roller coasters, there is so much more to this beautiful state than just Disney and Orlando. One of the things we love more than anything is getting AWAY from the Brit tourists and discovering the “wilder” side of Florida. Of course Clearwater isn’t exactly wild, nor is it getting away, but it does have the most beautiful beach.
Here my two daughters are running with pure joy across the cool, white sand – joy at the space and the feeling of the soft powder beneath their bare feet.
Later we walked on the splendid pier that stretches out into the sea, watching the fishermen being dive bombed by pelicans and the groups of friends and families waiting for the sun to go down. I managed to snap this picture of a seagull passing – looking, no doubt, for any tasty morsel dropped by bird or man.
We’re going back to Florida soon, for one last trip before we head to South Africa. I can already feel the heat of the sun on my shoulders, hear the sounds of the children squealing in the swimming pool, taste the first beer as we salute the evening, smell the fried hash browns of the diner breakfasts, see the huge ocean and the bright sky. I can’t wait.
Have you been to Florida – and if so, have you managed to escape from the maddening crowds? Do you have any suggestions for special places to visit?
I don’t mind at all 🙂 Beautiful photos and a story behind them!

Beautiful photos! I lived in Florida (Fort Lauderdale) and I went to Clearwater a couple of times. I went there when it was low season and there weren’t many people.

It’s such a beautiful beach and although it was busy (we were actually there over Memorial Day so that weekend especially so) the beach is so large it didn’t seem too crowded.

Oh I could go there right now! The only place I’ve visited in the US is California, we’re not in a good location for grtting to the States where we are now. I’d love to go to Florida when we’re a bit closer.

This is why we’re going this Spring – once we’re in SA it’ll be a bit more of a trek (plus there will be so many great places to visit more locally). It’s a fantastic holiday destination if you have children though – very geared towards families and loads to do.

Beautiful photos! I love Florida beaches! I also recommend St Augustine FL, a great town for eating and shopping and the nearby Anastasia island for getting away from the crowd.

Thanks for the tips! I hadn’t heard of Anastasia. So many places, so little time. …

Our family really enjoyed swimming with the Manatees at Crystal River, Florida-we hired a private boat with a biologist and it was really wonderful. Two children aged 9,and 6 and 4 adults.

Love it! Clearwater is so beautiful. Have you been to Sand Key Park? We had such an amazing time there a few weeks ago!

I don’t think we did, although we made it to Fort de Soto park which was incredible. I love that coastline, although having been to the Keys the last holiday it’s now debatable as to whether we’ll go back to Clearwater or back to the Keys next time….or Anna Maria, or….

How lucky you are to be able to visit Florida and Clearwater a lot. You’re right – I’ve seen there is so much more to the state than Disney and I hope when I go back, I will get to explore outside the main tourist hubs. Lovely photos. Thanks for linking up with #MondayEscapes
