Show Your World: Snowdonia

Fellow blogger Tiny Expat’s series Show Your World invites you to post about a place that you have visited, whether it be close to home or a distant destination. A few months from now I figure I’ll have plenty of “exotic” destinations to post about, whether it be South African safaris, Namibian deserts or Mozambique beaches. So I thought I would show off a place a little closer to home, but a place that’s just as worth visiting. It may not have the guaranteed sunshine or the wild animals but there’s still plenty to recommend about Snowdonia.

Best known as the home to Wales’ tallest mountain, Mount Snowdon, Snowdonia has become a magnet for adventure tourists wanting to climb the mountain, canoe, kayak, rockclimb or just walk in the surrounding area. We were actually there for my husband to zoom down the zipwire at Zipworld, apparently the longest zipwire in the country:

But while we were there we took the opportunity to soak up the gorgeous scenary

Which included a walk up the Great Orme of Llandudno on a stunning blue day

History seeps from the veins of Wales and round every corner we found a castle. Here is the castle at Conwy, a beautiful example of what so many of the now-ruined fortresses would once have looked like

Finally on the last day, we went deep into the forest for a tree-top adventure which, I think, was the highlight of the holiday for our two daughters:

  1. What perfect timing – we are heading to Wales and Snowdonia this weekend!!! If you have any suggestions beyond Snowdonia and Conwy, I’d love to hear them!!

    • I hope the weather is good for you – we were so lucky when we went, had some lovely days (which can be unusual in Wales 🙂 ). We also went to Portmeirion where they filmed the Prisoner which I always wanted to visit. It’s like a pretty Italian village and lovely to walk around. They also seem to have a few ice-cream shops there! I didn’t post pics from there as none of my photos came out that well. Wales has also become a real foodie paradise and there are some fantastic little food shops, deli’s etc all over the place. We went to Bodnant’s farm shop just up the road where we were staying to pick up food for an evening meal – can thoroughly recommend: http://www.bodnant-welshfood.co.uk/farm-shop

      • I will check it out! I am not expecting fabulous weather but it looks like hopefully only one of the four with rain. Similar to the Netherlands is my guess. Fingers crossed! I hear the villages are adorable as well as pontmeirion. I’m looking forward to it as this will be our first time in Wales.

  2. Sure…. our world have hundreds of beautiful places to visit, for their history, landscapes, traditions.. I’ve been in places that were breathtaking. In Costa Rica I “flied” with the canopy tour, in Sumatra I had in my arms a cococrodile… in Vietnam around my shoulders and body, local people put a on me a snake of 35 kilos!!!!! and so on…So being alone in the world, the only incentive is travelling (which unfortunately is very, very expensive). Pleas go on with Show your world, any parte of it, as it’s a delight to read. Your shots are very nice.

You made me feel quite homesick – I grew up in Bangor near Snowdonia and have many happy memories of the Great Orme and Llandudno pier, Caernarfon, Conwy and Beaumaris castles, and the beaches and coastal paths of Anglesey. A tip for anyone holidaying in that part of Wales – if it’s raining in the north, try visiting the Lleyn Peninsula – Criccieth or Portmeirion are nice spots – as you might get some sunshine there.

    • Thanks for the tips! We were only there for a few days but definitely will be back. We did manage to visit Portmeirion while we were there but it felt like there was a lot more to see and do (we didn’t actually make it up Snowdonia – another time!).
